The insistent realism of Don DeLillo’s ‘Falling Man’ and Paul Auster’s ‘Man in the Dark’
Ugo Panzani
Altre Modernità , 2011,
Abstract: Many scholars considered that the fictionalization of September 11 marked the apotheosis of the postmodern era of images and perception. At the same time, the WTC collapse inspired a kind of post 9/11 fiction characterised by strong realistic descriptions. The aim of this article is to understand how Don DeLillo's Falling Man (2007) and Paul Auster's Man in The Dark (2008) tried to find a way to present, through a complex recourse to realism, the uncanny events of 9/11 and its prolonged aftermath that culminated in the subsequent horrors of the Iraq war. The insistent assertion of a proper representation of the traumatic events explictly contrasts the evasive literary narrations and the imaginary counter-narratives that might erode the relevance of the events. Furthermore, the detailed representation of these tragedies opposes itself to the equally insistent aesthetics of terror, through a revaluation of what the American literary theorist Ihab Hassan correctly defined (with no religious implications) a “postmodern aesthetic of trust”, that “brings us to a fiduciary realism, a realism that redefines the relation between subject and object, self and other, in terms of profound trust.”
Trends of phytoplankton characteristics and their communities in pre- and post-liming time in Lake Orta (1984-1998)

Journal of Limnology , 2001, DOI: 10.4081/jlimnol.2001.91
Abstract: This paper is an assessment of the changing properties of Lake Orta phytoplankton in the period 1984-1998, which includes the large-scale liming carried out in the lake in 1989 and 1990. The phytoplankton is analysed first in its general properties (abundance, biovolume, chlorophyll-a concentration, average cell size, diversity) by means of time courses of the mentioned variables based on monthly data through the entire period, and by correlations between the same variables. Moreover, through clustering techniques, the evolution of the species composition has been studied, showing the gradual decrease of chlorophytes after the liming and the noticeable increase of the diatom population, both as biovolume and diversity. Although the assemblage of the dominant species still mirrors the presence of some residual toxic compounds into the lake water, in the most recent period the evolution of the algal populations showed a clear trend towards a species assemblage more similar to those observed in the other deep italian subalpine lakes. After the improving of the chemical environment, the main abiotic factor that in the next years could play a major role in modifying the species assemblage is probably the phosphorus supply, whose in-lake concentration is low, despite the high annual load from the basin. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the phosphorus dynamics represent the basis to make reliable hypotheses about the future evolution of the phytoplankton assemblage.
Recent dynamics (1995-1999) of the phytoplankton assemblages in Lago Maggiore as a basic tool for defining association patterns in the Italian deep lakes

Journal of Limnology , 2002, DOI: 10.4081/jlimnol.2002.129
Abstract: The main goal of the study presented here is to identify a repeatable pattern in the seasonal succession of phytoplankton assemblages in Lago Maggiore. In order to fulfil this objective we analysed the phytoplaktonic succession during a five years period (1995-1999), through the calculation of the Bray-Curtis similarity index applied to biovolume data. A cluster analysis has been then applied to the distance matrix, allowing the identification of sample clusters possessing a similar species composition. The comparison, through the whole period considered, of the phytoplankton assemblages characterising each cluster allowed to recognise six seasonal periods (Winter, Early Spring, Late Spring, Early Summer, Late Summer, Autumn), each of them characterised by a peculiar and repeatable species assemblage. Among the most interesting findings we would mention the existence of a Late Spring/Early Summer association, dominated by Planktothrix rubescens and Fragilaria crotonensis, probably peculiar of the deep subalpine lakes, where these species can better take advantage of the physical and chemical environment of the metalimnetic niche. The identification of a pool of dominant and sub-dominant species common to other southern subalpine lakes and the existence of a similar time periodicity in the development and decline of most of them across this lake district seem to be promising in order to give our results a wider application.

Abstract: Edda Gomez-Panzani,1 Stephen Chang,1 Joaquim Ramis,2 Michelle M Landolfi,1 Bert Bakker11Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals, Inc, Basking Ridge, New Jersey, USA; 2Ipsen Innovation SAS, Pharmacokinetic and Drug Metabolism, Les Ulis, FranceObjective: Lanreotide depot is a long-acting somatostatin receptor ligand injected deep subcutaneously every 4 weeks for the treatment of acromegaly. The aim of the presented studies was to establish whether lanreotide depot, administered to patients with acromegaly at an extended dosing interval of 6 or 8 weeks, is effective in maintaining appropriate serum growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels, with acceptable tolerability.Methods: Two studies were conducted. Study B1 compared lanreotide depot 120 mg (every 4, 6, or 8 weeks) with lanreotide microparticle formulation 30 mg (every 7, 10, or 14 days) in 98 patients who had a GH level of ≤2.5 ng/mL and normalized IGF-1. Study B2 evaluated lanreotide depot 120 mg administered to 64 patients every 8 weeks, after which the dosing interval was adjusted based on GH levels.Results: Mean lanreotide trough serum concentrations at steady state for all dosing intervals were >1.13 ng/mL, shown to achieve a GH level of ≤2.5 ng/mL. In Study B1, following treatment with lanreotide depot given every 6 or 8 weeks, 87.5% and 93.9% of patients, respectively, had normalized GH, whereas 83.3% and 88.5% of patients, respectively, had both normalized GH and IGF-1. In Study B2, 88.9% had normalized GH and 42.9% of patients had normalized GH and IGF-1 following lanreotide depot every 8 weeks. Gastrointestinal disorders, generally mild/moderate in severity, were the most common adverse events.Conclusion: In the studies presented, lanreotide depot 120 mg every 4, 6, or 8 weeks provided effective hormonal control with acceptable safety. An extended dosing interval is a feasible approach for patients adequately controlled with lanreotide depot 60 or 90 mg every 4 weeks.Keywords: growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics
Silencing Viral MicroRNA as a Novel Antiviral Therapy?
Ugo Moens
Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology , 2009, DOI: 10.1155/2009/419539
Abstract: Viruses are intracellular parasites that ensure their existence by converting host cells into viral particle producing entities or into hiding places rendering the virus invisible to the host immune system. Some viruses may also survive by transforming the infected cell into an immortal tumour cell. MicroRNAs are small non-coding transcripts that function as posttranscriptional regulators of gene expression. Viruses encode miRNAs that regulate expression of both cellular and viral genes, and contribute to the pathogenic properties of viruses. Hence, neutralizing the action of viral miRNAs expression by complementary single-stranded oligonucleotides or so-called anti-miRNAs may represent a strategy to combat viral infections and viral-induced pathogenesis. This review describes the miRNAs encoded by human viruses, and discusses the possible therapeutic applications of anti-miRNAs against viral diseases.
Selective Redundancy Removal: A Framework for Data Hiding
Ugo Fiore
Future Internet , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/fi2010030
Abstract: Data hiding techniques have so far concentrated on adding or modifying irrelevant information in order to hide a message. However, files in widespread use, such as HTML documents, usually exhibit high redundancy levels, caused by code-generation programs. Such redundancy may be removed by means of optimization software. Redundancy removal, if applied selectively, enables information hiding. This work introduces Selective Redundancy Removal (SRR) as a framework for hiding data. An example application of the framework is given in terms of hiding information in HTML documents. Non-uniformity across documents may raise alarms. Nevertheless, selective application of optimization techniques might be due to the legitimate use of optimization software not supporting all the optimization methods, or configured to not use all of them.
Designing Data Protection Safeguards Ethically
Ugo Pagallo
Information , 2011, DOI: 10.3390/info2020247
Abstract: Since the mid 1990s, lawmakers and scholars have worked on the idea of embedding data protection safeguards in information and communication technology (ICT) with the aim to access and control personal data in compliance with current regulatory frameworks. This effort has been strengthened by the capacities of computers to draw upon the tools of artificial intelligence (AI) and operations research. However, work on AI and the law entails crucial ethical issues concerning both values and modalities of design. On one hand, design choices might result in conflicts of values and, vice versa, values may affect design features. On the other hand, the modalities of design cannot only limit the impact of harm-generating behavior but also prevent such behavior from occurring via self-enforcement technologies. In order to address some of the most relevant issues of data protection today, the paper suggests we adopt a stricter, yet more effective version of “privacy by design.” The goal should be to reinforce people’s pre-existing autonomy, rather than having to build it from scratch.
Extracting Minerals from Seawater: An Energy Analysis
Ugo Bardi
Sustainability , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/su2040980
Abstract: The concept of recovering minerals from seawater has been proposed as a way of counteracting the gradual depletion of conventional mineral ores. Seawater contains large amounts of dissolved ions and the four most concentrated metal ones (Na, Mg, Ca, K) are being commercially extracted today. However, all the other metal ions exist at much lower concentrations. This paper reports an estimate of the feasibility of the extraction of these metal ions on the basis of the energy needed. In most cases, the result is that extraction in amounts comparable to the present production from land mines would be impossible because of the very large amount of energy needed. This conclusion holds also for uranium as fuel for the present generation of nuclear fission plants. Nevertheless, in a few cases, mainly lithium, extraction from seawater could provide amounts of metals sufficient for closing the cycle of metal use in the economy, provided that an increased level of recycling can be attained.
?Qué cosa es un libro para el Libro de los libros?
Volli, Ugo;
Tópicos del seminario , 2009,
Abstract: just as the name itself says, the bible (from the greek ta biblia, or rather, the books) or in hebrew ha-mikrà (which means reading), is considered in its translation as the book par excellence. but, what is a book for the book par excellence? the word used in the original hebrew language is sefer, which means book in this case but also scroll (which in latin is translated by volume, from the verb volvere, to roll up) which includes any document sufficiently big to be kept rolled up, like a treaty or a letter. however, there is a more complete meaning that emerges coherently from the biblical use: a sefer is the fruit of the act of memory that precedes a teaching that should be publicly proclaimed. in this article, we will state the different biblical acceptations of the term and we will try to clarify their meaning.
POSICIONES LEGALES Y COMPLEMENTARIEDADES INSTITUCIONALES
Pagano,Ugo;
Revista de Economía Institucional , 2003,
Abstract: legal positions (such as rights, duties, liberties, powers, liabilities and immunities) are linked together by strong institutional complementarities that differ from the usual institutional complementarities that have been recently considered in economic literature. legal positions not only satisfy the usual conditions of institutional complementarity stemming from the fact that legal positions that ?fit? together are marginally better than those that do not. they also define legal equilibria characterized by the social scarcity constraint that is typical of positional goods.
